Will 2013 bring you that ereader, tablet or smart phone you've been wishing for? Looking to download eBooks or audiobooks? If you have a Monmouth County Library card, you can download for free!
Card holders are invited to browse the Library's collection of eBooks and audiobooks, check out titles with your library card, and download them to PC, Mac®, ebook readers, tablets, and many portable mobile devices.
This past year, the Monmouth County Library launched Library on the Go!, your source for eBooks and audiobooks. All it takes is a valid resident Monmouth County Library card to check out and download digital media anytime, anywhere, by visiting http://monmouth.lib.overdrive.com
Users must have a valid Monmouth County Library card to access Library on the Go!. Library on the Go! is not be open to paid borrowers (those patrons living in municipalities not covered by the Monmouth County Library System who choose to pay annually for a county library card.)
In addition to Library on the Go!, the Monmouth County Library also makes eBooks available through EBSCO eBooks (formerly NetLibrary). The Library now has almost 25,000 book titles available through these two services, including fiction and nonfiction books for adults, children and teens.
Read on for more information on how to download eBooks and more.
Most downloadable eBooks and audio books require installation of software before the books can be downloaded to your computer or device. Requirements/instructions vary by device.
Before attempting to download digital books for the first time, it is important to review the instructions that can be found on the Library's website on the How to Download eBooks from Library on the Go link listed under Hot Topics. Ebsco book instructions can be found here.
In addition, the Library offers frequent how-to courses for patrons with ereaders. The next free class will be for iPad users and will be held at Library Headquarters in Manalapan on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
Just one cautionary note for patrons interested in e-books: some patience is required. There may be a waiting list for popular titles, as the Library must purchase copies of eBooks, just as it does print editions.
Patrons will be able to place holds on eBooks and audiobooks, just as they do with print editions. Patrons can choose whether to check out titles for 7 or 14 days.
Titles will expire at the end of the lending period and will be automatically removed from the device or tablet and cannot be renewed. There are no late fees! Patrons are limited to checking out five titles at one time.
A tutorial on the website will walk patrons through downloading eBooks to their specific device. An OverDrive Media app can also be installed on many mobile devices.
