Celebrate more than 40 years of Jazz at the Monmouth County Library in November!

Library Commission Chair Renee Swartz invites all of Monmouth County, young and old, to celebrate this eclectic art form through the contrasting styles of the featured musical groups, during November is Jazz Month. These free concerts are held at Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan 07726.ree concerts will be offered this month.

Houston Person Quartet

The Father of Acid Jazz turns 80 this month! Celebrate Houston Person's birthday with him...Live! Grooving a growling tenor sax, Houston is truly a stylemaker. A veteran of more than 75 albums as a player, bandleader and longtime partner of Etta James, he continues to teach and reach - through Jazz - into every musical genre.

Claudio Roditi Brazilian Jazz Quartet

This Grammy-nominated, Rio-born trumpet and flugelhorn player has been on the US jazz scene since 1970, and has played with everyone from Mario Bauza and Herbie Mann to Tito Puente and McCoy Tyner. Today, Roditi will share his original warm and lyrical compositions with us, some found on his recent release, Simpatico.

World War I Film Series at Library Headquarters

joynoelThe World War I Centennial Commemorative Film Series continues at Library Headquarters on Thursday, December 4 at 2 PM.

Come view Joyeux Noel, a classic World War I film about Christmas Eve in 1914. As the Germans faced the British and the French in battle, a spontaneous cease-fire happened for one night, as all of the troops came together for one night of peace.

The Great War Centennial: 1914-1920 World War I Film Series is a Commemorative Film and Lecture Series presented by Neil O'Connor and Martin Spindel, who are members of the Center for World War II and Conflict Resolution at Brookdale Community College. Stay tuned for more great films as the Library marks the 100th anniversary of World War I.

The Big Read Multi-Faith Panel Discussion on Women's Role in Religion, Inspired by "In the Time of the Butterflies"

intimebutterfliesJoin us at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters on Monday, December 8 at 7 PM for a Big Read event: a multi-faith panel discussion on Women's Role in Religion, Inspired by In the Time of the Butterflies.

In the Time of the Butterflies is author Julia Alvarez's fictional account of the Mirabal sisters, four sisters from the Dominican Republic. Three of the sisters were assassinated on November 22, 1960 by forces associated with the dictator Rafael Trujillo.

The panel discussion is sponsored by The Monmouth County Center for World Religions and Ethical Thought, and will address the issues of violence against women and political dissent inspired by the lives and deaths of the Mirabal sisters.

The Monmouth County Library is proud to partner with The Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education (Chhange) at Brookdale Community College for The Big Read program.

The Big Read, an initiative designed to restore reading to the center of American culture and to encourage community-wide reading and discussion, is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Chhange has selected In the Time of the Butterflies and Before We Were Free, both by Julia Alvarez, for the 2014 Big Read program.
