Tradition! Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fiddler on the Roof

E-mail Print PDF

fiddlerThis year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Broadway opening of Fiddler on the Roof, the first  Broadway play to surpass 3,000 performances. Fiddler is noted for its music and its depiction of family life in Russia and the struggle of people to maintain their traditions.

Come celebrate Fiddler at 50 as the Monmouth County Library Headquarters presents Tradition! A Musical Celebration of 50th Anniversary of Fiddler on the Roof on Sunday, September 21 at 2 p.m. This special celebration is free and open to all.

Violinist David Podles will showcase all the styles of Jewish musical genre that inspired the music in Fiddler and discuss how each genre directly influenced the music in the show. He will play pieces beginning with ancient Hebrew Nigun, to European Jewish music, to Freilehs used in Klezmer, which is music for celebration and dancing.

Singer Maggie Worsale of the Traveling Literary Theater will perform some of the songs from Fiddler with her accompanist, renowned pianist John Colianni. Worsdale has a voice that defies categorization -- jazz, Broadway standards and novelty songs are all part of her repertoire.

Colianni has been the pianist for many notable bands, singers and orchestras, including Mel Torme, Woody Allen, Lionel Hampton, Les Paul at NYC'S Iridium Cafe, as well as his owngroup, The John Colianni Quintet.
